The Joy of Writing and Reading a Series

As a reader myself, there is nothing more exciting than the start of a new series. It’s even better if I can find a series that is already started and binge read through all the books. It’s like falling into another world where I am invited to stay for a little while. The better job an author does, the more my curiosity is sparked and the more books I read.

I don’t know about you but once I realize I’m in the middle of a series, I start to get excited about each walk-on character. Will this character become the protagonist of the next book? And yes, it’s a little sad when a series is over or a favorite character didn’t get his or her own book.

As a Harlequin Love Inspired author, I’m given the opportunity and encouraged to write series books. Series books have a common thread of connection. It could be family, a town, employment, a theme, a situation (like a tornado) or even an object such as a locket, a wedding dress, or even a book or Bible. Of course, they are all ultimately connected by the world they occupy.

There are several types of series books too. One is the standalone series where each book can be read out of order without context issues.

Another series type features the pivotal character/s in each subsequent books. Often this type of series book-usually a trilogy- has an overarching conflict that is dealt with in each book. The ultimate final conflict or final battle occurs in book three, tying up all threads.

Other series books take secondary characters or simply characters from the fictional world who have not been introduced and make them the leads in the next book or books.

You can see how these different types of series books can even be mashed-up to create new and varied types of series books.

A unique type of series and one that Harlequin is known for is called the continuity series. This follows the traditional series thoughts, but each book in the continuity is written by a different author. Clearly, this requires a good deal of cooperation and communication between authors and a clear series bible (the written source that details all the plots and characters and miscellaneous information in the continuity… to maintain, well, continuity!

I personally love writing a series as much as readers love reading them. That said, they do require diligence to details and an obligation to keep each story as free from repetition as possible. Starting a new series requires a promise to both the characters and the readers that each story will be unique, fresh and original.

Big Heart Ranch is my second series for Harlequin. The first was the five-book Paradise, Colorado series based on a fictional town in Western Colorado. Big Heart Ranch is a four-book series set in the fictional town of Timber, Oklahoma only twenty minutes south of Pawhuska. Pawhuska, you may recognize as the real home of the Pioneer Woman’s Mercantile store. Or the Merc.

One advantage of a series is that I can offer special series bonus’s to readers on my website. tinaradclife.com And I do. This includes the epilogue for book 1 and several recipes used in the stories.

This week’s book tour is book three of Big Heart Ranch, Christmas with the Cowboy, which is Emma Maxwell Norman and Zach Norman’s story. This is a Christmas story with elements of Charles Dickens’s The Christmas Carol. Books one and two are available to binge. Book four, Tripp Walker’s story will be out in early 2019.

This was the first book I've read by Sarah, but it will NOT be the last!
There are very few authors who can get me to seriously laugh out loud, and I can now add Sarah to that list.

This is book 3 in her "Carrington Family" series. Thought you should always try and read a series in order (yes I'm talking to me too), these books can be read on their own.

The only thing I felt I was missing was more time in this world. I am lucky enough to have book 1&2 on my shelves already...you best believe my nose will be in those books when my schedule opens up a bit.

Let's talk about the humor in this book. Like God's grace it ABOUNDS!

Something to know about me...I LOVE PUNS! Way more than is socially acceptable actually. 🤷
So to get pun after pun after wit after wit, I was in book nerd heaven!

The characters meet VERY abruptly, but instantly they have a bond. Yes you can tell they have chemistry, yes we all know they're going to fall in love. BUT THEY STARTED OUT AS SUPPORT SYSTEMS FOR EACH OTHER! They were instant friends and instant sounding boards for each other.
I got so engrossed in the story and them, that I'd completely forget they barely knew each other. That's how comfortable they were in each other's company.
And I LOVE relationships like that. Yes they might move a touch fast, but they don't FEEL like they do.

This is a dual timeline story. Now these books normally aren't my cup of tea because I feel like my brain is trying to keep up with too many things at once.
However, I never felt bogged down by the historical timeline in this book. It didn't drag or feel unnecessary. It kept a nice steady pace and kept up with the modern day story line.

This book deals with adoption, and some of the messy parts of finding birth parents. It was definitely interesting to see the different emotions Olivia went through during the whole process.

I actually remember when Sarah was doing research for this book. I am honored and so proud to read the fruits of her labor!

On top of the adoption theme there was the theme of forgiveness. Forgiving other people, and forgiving oneself.
RE-learning that everyone deserves that "AMAZING GRACE" no matter what they've done.

This was a SUPER cute read, I loved the main characters and both of their families.
I rated this a 4.5/5 stars.

On the Sunday after the children brought the tree home, and during our ritual lunch, I shared with Dad my concern over whether readying the house for Christmas was a good idea or not.

“Why wouldn’t it be?” he asked.

I stabbed at fried okra piled high in a small bowl next to a plate of chicken and dumplings—Sunday being the one day I threw my diet to the wind. I’d somehow managed—even after giving birth to three children and the last one being “later in life”—to stay close to the same weight as when Jackson and I married. Giving myself one day to eat as I pleased kept me from binging and putting on more of the middle-age spread than giving birth to three children had caused.

“I don’t know, Dad,” I said. “I don’t want them to get too hopeful . . .”

Dad bit into a fat, glistening fried chicken thigh, chewed, and swallowed. “Too hopeful? About what?”

I rested my fork on the edge of the plate and shook my head. “I don’t know. A Christmas miracle maybe?”

“Are you planning on putting out more than the tree?” Dad asked, ignoring my quip.

“I wasn’t,” I said with a smile. “But then I saw all those decorations . . . the Nativity set . . . Mary.”

Dad laughed as he wiped his mouth with a paper napkin. “Goodness, I’ll never forget that Christmas. The way Jackson surprised you with it.”

Oh, yes. Jackson had put his foot down firmly in the antique mart, saying “absolutely not,” even as I begged and pouted prettily for it. He wasn’t spending that much money—money we didn’t have—he said, on something we’d only look at a few days a year.

He dealt with my sulking all the way home. The cold supper I prepared later and the cold shoulder I gave him that night when he reached for me beneath the covers. And all the while, unbeknownst to me, he’d called my father while I slapped mayo on bread and asked him to swing by the mart on his way home from work and purchase the crèche. “I’ll bring you the money tomorrow,” he told him.

And then he did.

That Christmas Day in 1999, as we unwrapped the gifts from under the tree at Dad’s, Jackson made me save the “big one for last,” then watched my face light up brighter than the eastern star as I realized what crinkled sheets of newspaper protected within the box. “Oh, Jackson,” I said, throwing myself into his arms and kissing him more amorously than I usually did, which seemed to both thrill and shock him. “I can’t believe you did this. I really can’t believe it.”

The nativity set hadn’t been his only gift that year. There’d been two others—the first, our daughter Sara, who slept bundled in her grandfather’s arms, and a “Baby’s First Christmas” ornament I found tucked into the toe of my stocking, just as I’d found the “Our First Christmas” ornament a year before. Jackson had her name—Sara Joy Morgan—engraved on the back along with her date of birth—July 31, 1999.

I'm so glad to be back on Big Heart Ranch. I SERIOUSLY LOVE THIS FAMILY!!

PLLUUUSSS it's a Christmas book, can it get much better?

YES! Yes it can. We got one of my favorite troupes again...

CHILDHOOD FRIENDS FALLING IN LOVE!

We see a bit of a weird, slightly sad beginning for these two though. Missed FIRST chances, but they were offered the second chance of their life.

I really enjoyed the one on one relationship, but I also liked how they included the ranch family in everything.

They weathered every storm together!! They turned grief into joy and gave forgiveness and redemption the 'Big Heart Ranch' way.

What makes a book go from good to great is the side characters. They make the book complete.

This book was brimming with great characters.

Besides the Maxwell siblings (who are always a hoot), there was Dutch and if he can't make you smile, literally nothing else can. He was such a goon...and I loved him. He filled his role as "old timer ranch hand" BEAUTIFULLY in my opinion. And all the "Dutch-isms"...YES PLEASE! They kept me chuckling.

I really loved this story, and I can't wait to see what else is to come from Tina.

I rated this a 4/5 stars.

ON HER RETURN FROM CHURCH, Kileenda Jensen discovered a problem, and it had nothing to do with her name. Hardly anyone called her Kileenda. This was a story FULL of amazing messages and scriptures.

A great, strong Christian message of God's love and forgiveness though the whole book.

GUYS! Look what is finally on my blog...my thoughts on this little thang.

I was recently talking to Jenna Van Mourik and we've dubbed ourselves the "Procrastination Princesses"...so please forgive the tardiness of this review.

Though this book *looks* like a bit of a chunker once I got started I really got into the story.

To be honest I was not a fan of Vianne at first...or Asim for that matter. 🙊
He was super hard and bitter and she was young and naive. But oh what a little time and a whole lot of God can do.

They sought the kingdom of God first for themselves and that got them prepared for life with each other.

The bishop's stance on the union between the two confused me just a wee bit. I wasn't sure if he really FOR it or really AGAINST it, because he played both cards throughout the book.

I mourn for Leala. What she had to sacrifice as the eldest and the fact that she never found peace in God's presence.
I kind of hope there will be a companion novel about Leala. I felt a strange kinship with her and I want her to find her walk with God from her younger years.
But at the same time the story had an air of finality about it...one can hope!

A wonderful story of looking past people's skin color and society's prejudices to find the REAL person underneath.

I rated this a 4/5 stars.

Can forgiveness be found?

Let's start with what I enjoyed about this book, shall we?

I LOVED the diversity of this book! How interesting to see the social exchanges between two VERY different families in a tough time in history.

I LOVED the writing style of this book! It was so lyrical and once I GOT started I found myself flipping through the pages rapidly.

At first the change in P.O.V threw me off, but the further I got into the story the more I enjoyed it.

Now let's dive into some topics that were dealt with.

SECRETS were a HUGE part of this book. On top of that, they were drawn out and our imaginations were left to run wild and draw our own conclusions.

HATRED played another huge role. Whether self hatred or hatred of other people I could feel the emotion oozing out of the page.

RACISM was woven inside every twist and turn. Welcome to the 1950's...sadly!

PAIN that was internal. The cries of a mother's broken heart. The cries of a sister who feels she is to blame.

HEALING & FORGIVENESS finally showed their faces when you thought they wouldn't.

Some things I had issues with.

Everything being drawn out was a key factor in why it took me almost a month to finish the book.

The racism and hatred were another reason!! I read fiction to laugh and be transported into a perfect little fairytale world. I forget that there really were heart wrenching stories like this one in history. So to be hit in the face at every turn with a mother hating her daughter, and hating everyone who looked at her,and all the judgement that was coming from her P.O.V was ROUGH to say the least.

It was a VERY deep book, one that is GREAT for an older audience or people who have personally faced some of this loss. Seeing as I haven't and I'm more of a lighthearted history lover, this book wasn't quite my speed. I really wanted to love it because the premise sounded amazing and I really enjoyed the writing style, but I couldn't.

I personally rated it a 2/5 stars. Though I know this book has the power to change someone's life!
