A murder investigation uncovers sordid secrets and haunting mistakes

The Darkwater Inn stands tall and proud in the French Quarter, the hub of New Orleans. Bourbon Street is bustling, and General Manager Adelaide Fountaine has her hands full with a hotel at capacity. She, along with everyone else, is shocked when a body is found: a hotel guest stabbed with a kitchen knife.

Detective Beau Savoie, Adelaide’s childhood friend, is on the case. As Beau digs into the victim’s past, he unearths a shocking connection between Adelaide and the murdered guest. Beau is hurt that his friend—the woman he’s quietly loved for years—kept the truth from him. To make matters worse, the stress of the investigation has sent Adelaide right into the comforting arms of her coworker Dimitri. But Beau can’t press Adelaide too hard . . . he’s keeping secrets of his own.

Can Adelaide and Beau afford to hide from the truth with a killer on the loose?

MY THOUGHTS

Oh I was so excited about this book! New Orleans and mystery...yes please!

I really liked the style of this book. (I mean I stayed up until 2am to finish it)
The secondary characters were GREAT! They had me chuckling, they had me tearing up. All the emotions...

I really liked Beau's character. He was considerate, patient, forgiving, loving character.  And he had a heart of gold.

I liked how Dimitri became his own man through this book. He was a great male lead as well.

Adelaide was a strong character. She knew what she wanted and she went after it. Her reluctance to tell the cops PERTINENT information did get under my skin, but at the same time I could see where she was coming from.

I LOVE the friendship between Beau and Adelaide! It stood the test of time and heartbreak. THOSE ARE MY FAVORITE!

The murder/mystery/suspense itself was great. I loved being in the middle of the investigation.

However there were a few things that bothered me about this book.

*TRIGGER WARNING!!!!! *

This book deals with rape.
It's talked about briefly towards the beginning of the book, but gets heavier and heavier as the story progressed.
This isn't a personal trigger for me, but even I was starting to have a hard time with it.

Also there is quite a bit of "voodoo" talk. Now I understand that this book is based in NEW ORLEANS, but voodoo was a pretty big part of the subplot and it gave me the heebee jeebees!

I'm not entirely sure how I feel about the love triangle...I *think* I'm rooting for Beau.

This series will not considered "standalones" in my opinion. I have a feeling the series is going to flow from one book to the next.

Overall the book was okay. It had some aspects I LOVED , and some I was not a fan of. I'm not entirely sure if I'll pick up the rest of the series. I do really want to know who Adelaide ends up with though...🤔
I rated it a high 3/5 stars.

*I received this book in exchange for my honest review**I was not required to post a positive rating**All opinions are my own*
