Review: The Unexpected Champion

The Unexpected Champion

"City dweller John McCall never expected to be out in the High Sierras of 1868 on a wild-goose chase to find the Chiltons' supposedly lost grandson. But now that he's out here, things have gotten even more complicated, mostly due to wildcat Penny Scott. She's not like any woman he's ever met--comfortable in the woods, with a horse, and with a gun.

When Penny and John are taken against their will by a shadowy figure looking for evidence they don't have, both realize they've stumbled into something dangerous and complicated. With their friends and family desperately searching for them, Penny and John must make a daring escape.

When they emerge back into the real world, they are confronted with a kidnapper who just won't stop. They must bring a powerful, ruthless man to justice, even as this city man and country woman fight a very inconvenient attraction to each other."

Author: Mary Connealy
Length: 304 pages
Series: High Sierra Sweethearts (book 3)

What do a city gent and a country gal have in common?
Outlaws who want them dead.

Y'ALL! I'M BACK TO REVIEWING! *internal and external flailing*
I'm so excited to come back to the blog with a review for this book!

Here's the real deal.
I went into this book with VERY low expectations after reading the first two books in the series. I was not the biggest fan of them. 🙊
Plus I've come to learn something about my reading self...if I go into a book with high expectations I am, more times than not, disappointed.

This book though. This book had me laughing out loud. This book was the Mary Connealy I know and love!

I had no clue it was going to be a "shotgun wedding" story, but oh how I LOVED that it was! I LOOOOOOVVVVEEEE that plot line...SO. MUCH.
*deep breaths*
I was giddy the entire time I read this book. Okay, maybe not the entire time because --well-- bad guys, but 90% of the time I was smiling like a loon!

I loved Penny & John in this book SO MUCH! (Wow, how many times can I click the caps lock button during this review?!)
They were so different from one another, but they complemented each other near-perfect. They both had weaknesses and strengths that the other didn't have, and YES they butt heads a bit, but in the end they worked WITH each other and really balanced one another out.

I really enjoyed the mystery/intrigue plot of this story. We were in the THICK of it, and the *happy sigh* romance just happened to blossom around it.

This is already on my "re-read list". It. Was. So. Good. I'm so happy I read it.
4.5/5 stars!

*I received this book from the author**I was not required to give a positive rating**All opinions are my own*

AUTHOR INTERVIEW

What was the first book that made you realize reading means a lot to you?

K: I have loved books since I was a little girl. My grandma used to take me to the bookstore in the mall and let me pick out a book. At that point in my life I chose picture books. I LOVED them. They were hardback books and had such pretty pictures. 😊

My mom used to take me to the library when I was young and I remember checking out Sammy the Seal multiple times.

As I grew older my love for books continued. I discovered The Hardy Boys and Nancy Drew in my school library in the 4th grade. In the 7th grade I was an aid in our school library, and one day I discovered Love Comes Softly. I have been hooked on Christian romance ever since. LOL Sorry for the long answer.

I love this answer! I love finding out the origin behind people's love for reading!

What are some of your favorite memories from the library?

K: Oh my goodness that is actually a difficult question because growing up the library was always very utilitarian for me. I went there for a purpose, to do homework, do research, or find a book to read.

The library is a much more fun place now though. When my boys were young I took them to a Lego building workshop. There were prizes for the kids and it was a ton of fun. I also remember doing the summer reading program with them. Every week we would go and turn in their hours. They’d earn a ticket to be dropped into a drawing for a prize of—they got to choose which prizes they wanted to enter for. I have very fond memories of the library with my boys.

Those are the best memories. 💓

Tell me some books that you reread again and again!

K: I haven’t reread a book in quite some time, but the one book I have reread many times is The Princess by Lori Wick. I wish I had the time to read it again, but I have so many books on my kindle waiting to be read.

Confession: I haven't read that book yet. I've heard it's amazing, so it is on the list! (the very, very, very, long list)

What’s the craziest thing you’ve ever done in the name of research?

K: I once reached out the CIA or the FBI, I don’t remember which one now, this was over a decade ago. I might have contacted both lol. They suggest a book written by a former agent. I bought the book. The problem is I have one about the FBI and one about the CIA so that’s why I can’t remember. 😊

That is the coolest thing! I would never be able to do that. #chicken
Glad there are brave people out there!

K: Thanks for having me on your blog!

Thank you so much for being here today. It was a blast!

Parker Avery always promised his brother Charles he would look after Claire if anything happened to him. Charles stood by him three years ago when his wife Ann died and Parker is determined now to be a help to Claire and the girls. Author: Lin Stepp
Publisher: Mountain Hill Press
Genre: Inspirational Contemporary Romance
Release Date: April 2, 2019

In this gentle, inspirational romance, Lin Stepp reveals the healing touch and deep peace the beauty of the Smoky Mountains can bring to a hurt and troubled heart.

Too much work, too much pressure, and too much heartache can lead even a strong young woman like Mallory Wingate to the edge of a nervous breakdown. Now her doctor and employer have insisted she take a space to heal and rest—so like it or not, she’s heading to her grandparents’ resort in the Smoky Mountains. Hoping to sleep and rest on the flight home, Mallory is entertained instead by an unexpectedly charismatic stranger, making her forget many of her problems and even making her feel deliciously female again.

Lucas James, flying home from a pro golfing event, hadn’t expected to enjoy an interlude of flirting with a pretty stranger on the plane. A stranger he never expected to see again but who turns out to be the granddaughter of his boss at The Millhouse Resort. Worse, he quickly learns she’s passed through a recent history of emotional problems that remind him all too painfully of his past wife. The last thing Lucas wants is to get involved with anyone like Cecily again. Surely it won’t be too hard to keep his distance while Mallory is at the resort.

AUTHOR INTERVIEW

Tea or coffee? Iced or hot?

L: Hot coffee in the morning—always—two cups in a favorite mug to start the day … and …
hot tea later in the evening, while reading a good book after all my day’s work is done.
I especially love Republic of Tea specialties, like Vanilla Almond, Ginger Peach, or Red Velvet Chocolate and Celestial Seasons Fruit Teas… . Ahhhh!!

Those all sound like amazing flavors!

If you could write in another genre, what would it be?

L: Children’s picture books… and I’d love going into schools, libraries, and children’s bookstores to read them to groups of kids. Even though I taught college for almost twenty years, I still remember my K-8 elementary teaching roots, too!

Elementary school are some of my greatest memories! I love that idea.

What are your favorite scenes to write?

L: I love to write dialogue—taking the reader, like a fly on the wall, to eavesdrop on characters’ words and emotions…. Don’t we all love those moments when we get to watch drama unfold? …I also love painting memorable scenes to make my readers sigh and wish they were right there, in that place and time and moment.

Yes to all of this! LOVE!

Which one of your characters is most like you ? Least like you?

L: I’ve never purposely painted a character to be like me, but in reading back through Claire at Edisto recently, I saw much of my younger self in the main character Claire—a young woman encumbered with children, home, church, and a host of other activities with little time for herself. I remember those busy years… but, like Claire, I loved working with children, too. My creativity came out, as hers did, entertaining my own children and the many children I worked with through school, church, scouts, and more. My creative gifts, like Claire’s, weren’t seriously encouraged in my early life—and I struggled, as Claire did, to take my artistic gifts seriously and to envision how I might share them.

My least favorite characters—and those hopefully least like me—are the ones who deceive or exploit others for their own selfish ends…. like Elliott Howell in Tell Me About Orchard Hollow, Jonas Cole in Delia’s Place, Estelle Cunningham in Welcome Back and many more. I have never understood the conscience that allows some people to so hurt and damage the lives of others—and with little to no remorse.

What is your favorite holiday?

L: Christmas! … with all its sights, smells, delights, and generosity and goodwill in the air. Even the smells of Christmas are wonderful—evergreen boughs, turkey baking, pies and holiday cookies, and the scents of cinnamon, gingerbread, and Christmas spice candles on the air. Just like the old song: It’s the best time of the year.

Amen to that! I love Christmastime!!

Where do the inspirations for your stories come from?

The answer is Everywhere and Anywhere! … while hiking, while traveling, or while working in the yard, teaching or speaking for a civic group, reading the newspaper, or shopping and having lunch with a friend. Stories are everywhere waiting to happen and new inspirations for stories are all around us. You just need to tune in and listen for them. And then write those ideas down before you forget them!

I feel the same way about photography. There is a picture everywhere, you just have to look.

You have books about both the mountains and the sea. Which do you prefer?

B: I grew up near, and still live very near, the Great Smoky Mountains—and the scenes of Appalachia are in my blood and heritage. The mountains are who I am and a part of me—but the sea is my favorite escape spot for vacation… and the ocean calls to me, too—just as my mountains do.

The air is just sweeter in both places!

Thank you so much for being on the blog today Lin. It was a blast!

AUTHOR INTERVIEW

Tea or coffee? Iced or hot?

M: Definitely tea, and almost always hot.

The amount of times I've tried to like hot tea is ridiculous. I can't quite get myself taste buds to enjoy it.

If you could write in another genre, which would it be?

M: I’ve never given that any thought because I can’t imagine writing anything but romance.

Well I for one love ALL of my romance authors, so I'll take this.

What are your favorite scenes to write?

M: Probably high-emotion scenes. Though I dislike them as much as I like them. Because to do them justice, I have to “go there.” I have to feel what my characters are feeling and sometimes I don’t want to do that because it usually leads to crying.

But if you're feeling the emotions, we as readers will feel the emotion and I love that!

Which one of your characters is MOST like you? Least like you?

M: Carly from Their Ranch Reunion is probably most like me in that she’s very domestic. Kayla, the heroine in my September 2019 release, Reunited in the Rockies, or Grace from Falling for the Hometown Hero are probably the least like me, though it’s possible there’s always a little bit of me in each of my heroines.

What is your favorite holiday?

M: Christmas, hands down. I love everything about it, from the decorations to the music to the food and everything in between.

Mmm, yes ma'am! I LOVE Christmas!!

Where did the inspiration for this story come from?

M: I’m not really sure. I just knew that when five brothers grew up on a ranch, one of them was bound to be interested in rodeo and love horses. And what better partner for a guy who loves horses than a woman who’s scared to death of them.

Haha. Oh the things that could happen!

Thank you so much for stopping by today! It was an honor to have you.

I grew up as an only child and was always the sole child around a lot of adults. Books became my best friends. They were the childhood playmates I did not have readily available like children with siblings do.

I distinctly remember my grandmother handing me a pile of books that had belonged to my aunt when she was young. They were to occupy me while the adults were talking or cooking. She kept them on a little shelf in the coat closet for me. This became my haven. We would go to my grandparents’ home and I would go straight to the coat closet and grab my books. I would sit on the floor and be transported to the worlds of the characters.

One book in particular I remember being so enthralled by was Heidi. I couldn’t imagine having the high mountain peaks as my backyard, free to roam the countryside. I related to the hardened grandfather, as mine was also not very affectionate though I know he loved me greatly. I loved to read about her friends and her adventures. I could read Heidi over and over again while I was at my grandparents house.

Eventually I was turned onto the Shirley Temple film of the same name, but nothing could compare to the book that gave me so many pleasant memories in my childhood.

It was my grandma that gave me the outlet to find my love of reading as well.

Review: Of Fire and Lions

"Survival. A Hebrew girl first tasted it when she escaped death nearly seventy years ago as the Babylonians ransacked Jerusalem and took their finest as captives. She thought she'd perfected in the many years amongst the Magoi and the idol worshippers, pretending with all the others in King Nebuchadnezzar's court. Now, as Daniel's wife and a septuagenarian matriarch, Belili thinks she's safe and she can live out her days in Babylon without fear--until the night Daniel is escorted to Belshazzar's palace to interpret mysterious handwriting on a wall. The Persian Army invades, and Bellili's tightly-wound secrets unfurl with the arrival of the conquering army. What will the reign of Darius mean for Daniel, a man who prays to Yahweh alone?
Ultimately, Yahweh's sovereign hand guides Jerusalem's captives, and the frightened Hebrew girl is transformed into a confident woman, who realizes her need of the God who conquers both fire and lions."

Mesu Andrews with rip out your heart, step on it a few times, then mend it back together.

This story was a lot to ingest. I wanted to savor every single moment of it, so it took me longer to finish it. In all honesty I could've gone for another 400 pages. Every word had a purpose and they hit their mark with perfect aim.

One of the main reasons I love biblical fiction is how much it tests my knowledge of the Bible. Though I know my fair share of the book of Daniel, I had to set the book down and really wrack my brain to line what I knew, up with the book. I learned new things I never knew before too. It made me hunger to dive into the Scriptures and LEARN ALL THE THINGS.

I'm going to be super transparent with y'all right now!
It is very rare that I "feel" anything when reading Christian Fiction. Don't get me wrong, I see the hope and love oozing off pages, but I'm rarely so moved by what I feel in a book that I get choked up.
BUT THIS BOOK Y'ALL! I FELT God while reading this book. Though some aspects of this book are fictional, the God of Daniel is not. That miracle worker is not. Yahweh is not.

I will NEVER know what those times were like. I will never understand the physical and spiritual battle Daniel had to face on a daily basis. But I know that the same God back then, is the same God right now.
Getting a glimpse into what it could have been like was eyeopening. But even more so was the utter conviction I felt as I read this masterpiece. I never want to get to comfortable where I am that I take God's spirit for granted. Tomorrow is not promised, and I want to live every day having an ASSURANCE that when I take my last breath on earth I'll take my next in Heaven.

This book is so full of wisdom. I got SO much out of this book and I know it's going to stay with me for the rest of my life. For I feel this is the book that altered my walk with God.

If I could give this book more than 5 stars I absolutely would. Just know this piece of art has earned it's rightful spot as one of my favorite books ever!

Quotes:

"Our service to God isn't about comparing ourselves to others, my son. It's about measuring obedience to our individual calling."

"We've seen Yahweh do impossible thing, which has strengthened our fatih to endure more impossible things. We've grown spoiled and lazy in our freedoms, making us afraid to trust Yahweh for the uncomfortable."

What was the first book that made you realize reading means a lot to you?

I read Gone With the Wind in the eighth grade, mostly because I wanted to prove I could read a 1,026 page book (that was the format of the copy I had.) But I became so immersed in the world that Margaret Mitchell created, and it wasn’t until I was done that I realized how invested in the book I had become. I cried for two hours after reading the ending! That story had the power to draw out strong emotions. It made me care about characters as if they were real people. And it never left me.
Gone With the Wind was the first book that I realized could change a person’s life. Now I want to write books that God uses to change lives. I realize it won’t be my skill as a writer that does it. I’m no Margaret Mitchell. But I pray that the Holy Spirit will speak through my stories to draw people to Him.
