MY THOUGHTS

Wow-zah. This was the first book I've read by Elizabeth Goddard, and I'll tell you now...it will not be my last.

The author wrote a captivating story with a prologue that will hook you and never let you go.
(😉😉)
She wrote wonderful characters who had a lot of pain and baggage they had to deal with. Lots of healing happened throughout the pages.

Austin fought A LOT of demons. He beat himself up over things he had no control over. He learned to hold secrets in until they almost killed him. Even though it took a lot for him to open up to people he had a strong relationship with God. He was a natural protector and had a hard time coping when his protection didn't always work.

Willow was brilliant! I love when the leading lady has her head on straight, and can keep it that way in stressful situations. She was a tenacious character, she would hunt down every lead or hunch to complete a task given to her. She was always caring when she did so. She relied heavily on God when she felt she hit a road block, and I really admired that about her.

That's one thing I really loved about these characters, they all had a relationship with God. They went to Him when they were in trouble, and even to just thank Him for his protection.

This was a GREAT suspenseful book. Once I hit the 3/4 mark the ball REALLY started rolling and I was on the edge of my seat. I couldn't wait to get to the end of the book to find out who the "bad guy" was!

I really enjoyed the premise of this book, and the book itself, and I can't wait for the next book in the series!
I rated it a 4/5 stars.

Review: Christmas with Cocoa

Christmas with Cocoa

"Robin McKay is determined to save the struggling Animal Shelter and head her hometown's local Christmas event. but when plans go awry and Nate Ashford, Robin's former best friend, are factors at play, will her Christmas wish come true?"

Author: Cleopatra Margot
Length: 376 pages
Series: Faith to Love (book #1)

Healing may not happen overnight,
but it'll happen!

AHH who doesn't love Christmas stories?! 😍😍
I will literally read "Christmas books" at any point of the year. There is just something about them. *happy sigh*

This book is the start to, what I feel will be, an adorable series. The author does an amazing job writing cute, likable characters who center their lives around God.

This book was a super quick light read. The perfect thing to escape into when you're in the mood for a wholesome story.

I love the "best friend to boyfriend" troupe. Even though Nate had not been in Believe for 8 years, Robin and Nate picked up where they left off pretty quickly.

Robin was the perfect "hometown girl". She'd been in Believe her whole life and never planned to leave. She was a sweet girl who LOVED Christmas and hot cocoa. (YES GIRL!) She loved every two legged and four legged creature.

Nate was the typical Hallmark hero, practically perfect in every way. He was thoughtful and caring, just a gentleman.

I loved that the to separate families were very tight knit on their own, but they also were super close as a group. It was a cute aspect.

Though it definitely has its cliche aspects. (Not mad about it. Love me some cliches) This book had a great message within, and so much hope and love flowing from the pages. The author did not shy away from letting her love for God show, and I for one loved seeing that shine through!

Overall I really enjoyed the story! It was a cute Christmas read, and I NEVER say no to those. I'm excited to read the rest of the series.
I rated it a 3.5/5 stars.

Author Interview: Jaime Jo Wright

A few weeks ago I reviewed Jaime Jo Wright's newest release "Curse of Misty Wayfair", and today I'm interviewing her! 😍😍😍

***

Have you always wanted to be an author?

J: I have since I was thirteen. When I discovered the fun of telling stories, I never wanted to stop!

Where do you stand on Hallmark Christmas movies?

J: Mmmmm, this one’s tough. Typically, not a fan. This year? I was actually advised by my doctor to watch “lighthearted” material to help ease some of my autoimmune anxiety struggles. LOL So, I actually enjoyed a few although desperately missing my dark, Gothic comics and unsolved mystery podcasts.

Tea or coffee? Iced or hot?

J: COFFEE! Hot.

If you could write in another genre, which would it be?

J: Probably speculative. I think it’d be fun to write a whole other world.

I would love to see a speculative story from you! *swoon*

What are your favorite scenes to write?

J: The creepy ones!!! I usually write them and then have to edit so they’re not so dark as to alienate 80% of my readers LOL!

Those happen to be my favorite to read!

Which one of your characters is MOST like you? Least like you?

J: Hmmmm, most like me . . . probably Heidi from The Curse of Misty Wayfair. Least like me? Ivy from The House on Foster Hill.

Could you see your books turning into movies? If so which would you want produced first?

J: I think it’d be fun to see them turned into movies! I think my preference would be The House on Foster Hill because--I mean--creepy house….

I would love to see them try and pull that one off.

What is your favorite holiday?

J: Thanksgiving. I love cozy home, candles, pie, and naps. LOL!

MMMM. Yes, love all those things!

What’s your favorite season?

J: Autumn, for sure, with Winter a close second.

AGREED! It's not even spring yet and I'm anxiously awaiting fall.

Where did the inspiration for this story come from?

J: There were quite a few elements that contributed to it. I’ve always wanted to write a creepy story around an asylum. Some of it was personal experience, to be honest. And then, I wanted the challenge of writing a ghost story without actually writing a ghost story. LOL I can’t explain further without giving away spoilers.

You did an AMAZING job blending both of these thoughts into a beautifully creepy story. (That's all I'm going to say because you all need to read it yourselves)

Proficient gift wrapper or gift bag and done?

J: How about neither? I usually forget both and end up Walmart bagging it with a pathetic excuse that I’m a writer not a crafter.

Ha, well I'm sure all of your friends are fine with it if you keep pumping out your books.

Thank you so much Jaime for being here today!

If you haven't read a Jaime Jo Wright book I HIGHLY recommend you run to your nearest library or bookstore and get your hands on one.

ABOUT THE BOOK

"Left at an orphanage as a child, Thea Reed vowed to find her mother someday. Now grown, her search takes her to Pleasant Valley, Wisconsin, in 1908. When clues lead her to a mental asylum, Thea uses her experience as a post-mortem photographer to gain access and assist groundskeeper Simeon Coyle in photographing the patients and uncovering the secrets within. However, she never expected her personal quest would reawaken the legend of Misty Wayfair, a murdered woman who allegedly haunts the area and whose appearance portends death.

A century later, Heidi Lane receives a troubling letter from her mother—who is battling dementia—compelling her to travel to Pleasant Valley for answers to her own questions of identity. When she catches sight of a ghostly woman who haunts the asylum ruins in the woods, the long-standing story of Misty Wayfair returns—and with it, Heidi's fear for her own life.

As two women across time seek answers about their identities and heritage, can they overcome the threat of the mysterious curse that has them inextricably intertwined?"

Review: Brunch at Bittersweet Cafe

Brunch at Bittersweet Cafe

"From the RITA Award–winning author of Five Days in Skye comes a sweet, romantic treat that will leave you hungry for more.

Baker and pastry chef Melody Johansson has always believed in finding the positive in every situation, but seven years after she moved to Denver, she can’t deny that she’s stuck in a rut. One relationship after another has ended in disaster, and her classical French training is being wasted on her night job in a mediocre chain bakery. Then the charming and handsome private pilot Justin Keller lands on the doorstep of her workplace in a snowstorm, and Melody feels like it’s a sign that her luck is finally turning around.

Justin is intrigued by the lively bohemian baker, but the last thing he’s looking for is a relationship. His own romantic failures have proven that the demands of his job are incompatible with meaningful connections, and he’s already pledged his life savings to a new business venture across the country―an island air charter in Florida with his sister and brother-in-law.

Against their better judgment, Melody and Justin find themselves drawn together by their unconventional career choices and shared love of adventure. But when an unexpected windfall provides Melody with the chance to open her dream bakery-café in Denver with her best friend, chef Rachel Bishop, she’s faced with an impossible choice: stay and put down roots with the people and place she’s come to call home . . . or give it all up for the man she loves."

Author: Carla Laureano
Length: 432 pages
Series: Saturday Night Supper Club (book 2)

Dreams, Love and Carbs.
You can't go wrong with any of these things!

GUYS! I got to be around carbs and sugar and I didn't gain a single pound. (I also wasn't able to eat any of it which was definitely a downfall...)

I loved the premise of this book! The best friends-- who are more like sisters--, the dreams put on hold until they finally got fed up with life and made their dreams a reality, the bakery and all the things that went with it.
It was different than anything I've read in this genre before.

There were some great characters in this book. The main characters and the side characters!

Melody just wanted to be somebody's pick. She had a lot relationships fall through, she was hurt time and time again by people she thought loved her. Yet through it all she kept this hope for a happily ever after.
She was an easy going character, but she was still knew how to take control of a situation.

Justin was a strong character who didn't want to give up the control he had on his life. He had a plan and he stuck with it. He was a flirtatious hunk, but underneath he was scared to stray away from the comfortable.
He was a great guy, and I loved him! 😍

There was a lot of chemistry in this book! (I love chemistry, but there were a few instances that were bordering on too much) Still I loved it! There was a ton of wit and banter from all the characters , but especially from Justin & Melody. I was smiling like a fool because if the dialogue.

There were a few things I personally did not agree with. In the end the author got the message that we need to trust God even when the answer seems like a "no", it might just mean "not yet". It was full of hope.

Overall it was a really great read! I did enjoy the writing style and I am excited to give the next book a try.
I rated it a 4/5 stars.

Review: Never Vie for a Viscount

Never Vie for a Viscount

"The perky Lydia Villers is determined to leave behind her life as a social butterfly and do what she’s always dreamed of doing, pursue a career in natural philosophy. A shame the only scientist available to assist her is the one man she had once hoped to wed.

The brilliant Frederick, Viscount Worthington, Worth to his friends, has been betrayed too many times, including by the bubbly beauty who now wants to work at his side. How can he believe Lydia’s intentions are true this time? After all, someone is intent of sabotaging his efforts to create the perfect hot air balloon. But with the help of Miss Thorn and her beloved cat Fortune, the enthusiastic young lady and the wary lord might just discover that only together do they make the perfect chemistry.

This sweet, clean Regency romance is the sequel to Never Envy an Earl. Fortune’s Brides: Only a matchmaking cat can hunt true love."

Author: Regina Scott
Length: 244 pages
Series: Fortune Brides (book 4)

One false tale and their happily ever after was over,
Can a shared love of science bring them back together?

This whole series has been adorable romance after adorable romance, and this one was just perfect! 😍

Lydia wasn't my favorite character when we first met her in "Never Borrow a Baronet". She was super immature when the book first started, but by the end of the story I knew she was a diamond in the rough.
This book proved my hypothesis was correct! She was the sweetest thing, but she never let anyone walk all over her. Even when accusations and nasty words were being thrown at her she held her head high and responded with kindness and a smile.
She had brilliant ideas, in science and in how to deal with people. She definitely grew up a lot from book 2 to book 4. She became sure of her passion and purpose and she gave everything she had to it.

Worth was such an adorable character. He was so oblivious, but like in a "so smart he's not" way. He just made me smile. He preferred science to people, science was unchanging people were unstable. He guarded himself because he didn't want to get hurt again, but it never stopped him from furthering the well being of others.

I loved all of the characters, from the main to the secondary.
I cannot wait for Charlotte's story! 😍 Though I will be sad to see the series end.

I really enjoyed the science aspects, it was interesting to read about the beginning phases of the hot air balloon. Overall I loved the story!
I rated it a 5/5 stars.

Review: A Return of Devotion

A Return of Devotion

"Daphne Blakemoor was perfectly happy living in her own secluded world for twelve years. She had everything she needed--loved ones, a true home, and time to indulge her imagination. But when ownership of the estate where she works as a housekeeper passes on, and the new marquis has an undeniable connection to her past, everything she's come to rely upon is threatened.

William, Marquis of Chemsford's main goal in life is to be the exact opposite of his father. Starting a new life in the peace and quiet of the country sounds perfect until his housekeeper turns his life upside down.

They've spent their lives hiding from the past. Can they find the courage to face their deepest wounds and, perhaps, find a new path for the future together?"

Author: Kristi Ann Hunter
Length: 400 pages
Series: Haven Manor (book 2)

I KNEW I shouldn't have started this book at 8 p.m on a work night!
Did I listen to myself?
No.
The consequence of this was staying up until 3 a.m, then having to be the perkiest zombie in the Subway industry! (Do not ask me how I made it through that shift)
Am I sorry?
No.

I know Kristi Ann Hunter will ALWAYS grab my eyeballs and my heart within the first few words, and this book did not disappoint! I was instantly swept back to Haven Manor and I disappeared into the story within minutes.

If you've read book 1 "Defense of Honor" then you know we technically got Daphne's story then, however we got it from Kit's perspective then. We finally got to see Daphne's pain, Daphne's scars in this book.

There were some very powerful scenes when she REALIZED she lost her self when Benedict was born. Though she was not my favorite character I really admire how she fought to find herself after she realized how lost she really was.

 William. I liked him. Why?
Because he was arrogant. Weird I know, but hear me out!
In this time period aristocrats were supposed to have this mentality. He was a marquis and he KNEW it, and he knew how to use the power the title gave him. Yet he was a gentle and slightly unconventional aristocrat. He was very complex, and I liked him...

Both Daphne and William were very solitary individuals, but in different ways. And they had a chasm worth of differences between those reasons. They still balanced each other out super well.
Their love story was not what one normally sees, a normal happily ever after did not happen. They MADE their own, they made it work for their quirks because love overcomes all those little things.

The author did an amazing job crafting a hopeful story out of a hopeless situation.
This series is definitely deeper than her other one, but she still finds a way to bring humor, wit and unwavering love to her stories. Not only does she do a FABULOUS job writing romances, she always shows GOD'S love too!

I did enjoy this story, but I'm chomping at the bit to get Jess' story. She's a mystery and it should be a fun ride. 😏
I rated this 4/5 stars.

*I received this from the author**All opinions are my own*

Quotes:

It might be worth keeping Mrs. Blakemoor around simply for the plethora of surprises that came along with her.

He'd always made decisions based on what was practical, but ever since this woman entered his life, he'd been faced with the human aspect. He now had to consider people and their feelings.
It was dreadfully uncomfortable.

sewing sisters society blog blitz

Welcome to the Blog Blitz & Giveaway for The Sewing Sisters' Society, a collection of historical novellas by Ruth Logan Herne, hosted by JustRead Publicity Tours!

ABOUT THE BOOK

Sewing Sisters Cover 2 (4) Title: The Sewing Sisters' Society

Author: Ruth Logan Herne

Genre: Historical/Western Romance novellas

Release Date: January 22, 2019

Hattie McGillicuddy might not look like your typical matchmaker, but Hattie makes things happen in the little town of Second Chance, South Dakota. With the arrival of the railroad and official statehood, Hattie’s determined to bring brides west, and not just any brides. Brides who need the wide open prairie as much as the prairie- and the prairie men- need them! Three pioneer stories of unlikely love are woven around a little town full of homespun characters that take us back to another place and another time but with the same faith, hope and love we cherish today.

Macy can’t sew a lick, and she’s come to town with a sacrifice and a secret, but when Hattie’s first apprentice is attracted to the pastor of the only church in town—the man raising her illegitimate son— will the truth set her free? Or make her leave the town and her son behind? (The Pastor Takes a Wife)

Unjustly accused, Nellie comes west to escape the law. She has a way with tucks and gathers, and every Western town could use more tucks and gathers. She’s determined to improve the drab look of the prairie and manages to brighten hearts as well. But will her quick speech and firm ideas of women’s suffrage draw Levi Eichas closer or send the somber carriage maker running? (Second Chance Christmas)

Grief has robbed Ann Hazel, but when her aunt pushes her to go west and help an ailing Hattie McGillicuddy turn hems, Ann’s shamed into it. She’s managed to avoid life for awhile, but when Sol Eichas’s nanny comes down sick, Ann reluctantly agrees to help. As she winds her way around Sol’s heart and home, can the two troubled souls leave the past behind to embrace a future together? (Second Chance at Love)

EXCERPT
FROM "THE PASTOR TAKES A WIFE"

As he cut across the road, temptation pulled him in the other direction. He had to stop himself from turning right and walking straight down to Hattie’s place, because it wasn’t concern for Chickie that drew his interest.
It was the wish to see what Macy was up to, how she was getting on, and wouldn’t that put him in a fine pickle? He’d been warding off invites and potlucks from the first day he rode into town nearly three years back. The minute women realized he was a widowed father, they set their caps to make things right, and by ‘right’ they meant a mother for his child and a wife for him.
He’d had no interest, then.
Now his awareness was piqued, but he made a firm turn to the left and headed for the church. If there was something to come from this attraction, it would come in its own time. Work, first.
An hour later he’d written one foolish sentence five different ways, and couldn’t think of anything other than the kind way Macy took charge of Chickie the previous day. And there was the matter of her smile, soft and perfect. The sincerity of her words and the directness of her gaze.

He balled up the latest sheet of paper, scolded his foolish extravagance, and rolled his desk chair toward the window. Bright sun shone down on the growing town, the summer heat moving the air in thick waves.

Books. The one thing you can never have too many of.

As readers, we might have different preferences in style, genre, setting, and subject matter, but at the end of the day we can all agree on one thing: books are powerful. If crafted well, they have the ability to transport our hearts to another place in time, sweeping us away in an unforgettable adventure!

My name is Livy Lynn, and I’m the author of The Coronation, a modern YA Christian fiction book which centers around a modern-day monarchy in the whimsical, Europain nation of Tarsurella. The Coronation was the first novel I ever completed. Before that, I suffered from a terrible plague: the start-a-million-stories-but-never-finish-them, plague.

Yup, it happens to the best of us, and if you’ve ever dabbled in writing fiction, I’m sure you can relate!

When a story idea strikes like lightning the inspiration kicks in all at once and we HAVE to write. But then, after a few days, weeks, or months, the excitement wears off, and we find ourselves staring at a blank screen.

And then, another BETTER idea pops in, so we jump ship, swim through the ocean of endless ideas, and begin building something new! Until the next idea comes along. And then the next, and the next…

Does this pattern sound familiar? Do you find yourself doing this in your own life? As humans, sometimes we struggle with FINISHING projects and being faithful to complete what we said we were going to do.

The same thing happens in the blogging world. We launch out on a new endeavor, aglow with excitement, until we write several posts and realize that nobody is reading them. Then, we give up, or get distracted with our next, new, sparkly idea.

As Christians, this isn’t a very productive way to live life. God has called us to touch this world for His glory and we’re not doing a very good job representing Him if we struggle to finish our goals and assignments.

The Power of Vision: Know Where You’re Going!

In the midst of all our busy activity: writing books, publishing blogs, launching businesses, juggling college coursework - do we stop and ask ourselves why? Why am I doing what I’m doing? What is my motivation for this and why is it important to me?

Sometimes I find myself SO wrapped up in the business of my own life, I don’t even remember why I’m pushing myself so hard in the first place!
When we read God’s Word, we see the importance of having a vision, knowing our purpose, and knowing why we’re going to do something, before we set off excitedly toward our newest idea.

Jesus told His disciples, “Suppose one of you wants to build a tower. Won’t you first sit down to estimate and see if you have enough money to complete it? For if you lay the foundation and are not able to finish it, everyone who sees it will ridicule you, saying, ‘This person began to build and wasn’t able to finish it.’” (Luke 14:28-30)

Faithfulness is a character quality we are to grow in as we deepen our relationship with the Lord. At the end of our lives we all want to hear the Father say, “Well done, good and faithful servant!”

I believe it’s important to do as Jesus said and count the cost before we start something new. To truly slow down and take stock of ourselves, asking questions like:

Why am I passionate about this?

Where did this idea come from?

Is this something the Lord is leading me into in this season of my life?

What might I have to sacrifice in order to see this happen?

Once we know our WHY and our purpose for doing something, we’re able to stick with it for the long run!

I work with a lot of bloggers, coaching them and helping them reach their blogging dreams, and before they launch into their newest project, I challenge them to discover their why.

To slow down, pray about it, open their journals, and ask the Lord to speak to their hearts.

Habakkuk 2:2 says: “Write the vision, make it plain on tablets, that a harold may run with it.”

Once you know why you’re doing what you’re doing, write it down, post it on your wall, and daily remind yourself of your purpose, you’re SO much less likely to give up! Having a strong why can pull you through the hardest of days, even when tackling massive projects like blogging or writing a book!
